Throughout the history of this digital publication, we have discussed arguments as to why every traveler should engage in the collection of points and miles, when to begin in the collection of points and miles, and how to get our friends involved in our low-cost adventures. All those being considered, perhaps what has not yet been discussed is how to make the most of points and miles at different life phases, based on what each generation values the most. When it comes times to making the most of the points and miles we collect, which credit cards can lead us to get the best return for what we want the most?
Lucky for us, we were not the only ones to consider that question carefully. American Express Global Business Travel and the Global Business Travel Association queried business travelers of three generations – the Boomer generation, Generation X and the Millennial generation – as to what they wanted most out of their travel experience. While their answers focused more on the business travel experience, through their response we can better understand how each group sees the world and how they can have even more control through points the points and miles they collect.
No matter what generation we are in, it is never too early to get into the points and miles game. These cards can help travelers at all stages of life see the world around them at a low price.

The respondents from the Millennial generation noted that they wanted to have absolute control over their travel experience, from both a booking standpoint as well as a provider standpoint. The average Millennial wants to be able to choose their travel providers, book wherever they are most comfortable and have the option to book by phone.
For those who are just getting started in their business adventures in life, the Chase Freedom Unlimited offers a strong value proposition. First off, the card offers unlimited 1.5 percent cash back on all purchases, with a generous $150 bonus after spending $500 in the first three months. From there, travelers can use the cash back to book trips where it makes the most sense for them, as well as have control over when they book and who with. Furthermore, as their needs change, the cash back earned can be upwards converted to Chase Ultimate Rewards points, earned through the Chase Sapphire line of cards.

Mid-Generation: Southwest Rapid Rewards Visa Signature
Where the younger generation wanted total flexibility, those in the mid-career phase of their lives want to be able to make changes without penalty, as well as help in completing their bookings. Among Generation X, the overwhelming majority responded their top priority was being able to make changes to their travel plans.
For those who are primarily looking at domestic travel, the Southwest Rapid Rewards Visa Signature card offers points to travel across the United States at a relatively low annual fee, combined with points that can be flexible throughout the travel process. Those booking on Southwest Airlines can change their travels without penalty, as well as get assistance over the phone or online without paying additional travel fees. For those who want the freedom to fly, this card gives them that ability.

Finally, the oldest generation of travelers is okay not being able to have as much control over their travel, so long as they have the ability to be comfortable and stay in touch in every phase. Flyers from the Boomer generation said their biggest concerns were dealing with airport security, while having internet access as they traveled.
Accordingly, The Platinum Card from American Express offers this older generation the ability to travel without the concerns of connectivity or security issues. The card comes with a built-in credit for TSA PreCheck or Global Entry, which will allow travelers to access the faster lane and keep shoes on as they pass through the checkpoint. In addition, the card also offers access to Boingo hotspots across the country for free, allowing them to stay connected at every phase of travel. Although it comes with a high fee, those who use all of the benefits of the card can actualize that fee every year.
While it is never too early (or late) to start, picking the right products are half the challenge towards actualizing value. By knowing which cards offer the most value, frugal travelers can make the most of every mile or point they earn.
