Citibank has lowered the sign-up bonus on its Citi ThankYou Premier Card from 40,000 points to 30,000 points on online applications.
Although not as dramatic of a cut as Chase Sapphire Reserve Card’s decreased sign-up bonus, the news isn’t great. It is still possible to earn 40,000 ThankYou points by signing up for the Citi ThankYou Premier Card at a Citibank branch and spending $3,000 in purchases within three months of account opening. However, that bonus also will be dropping to 30,000 points starting Jan. 22.
The card earns 3x points per dollar spent on gas and travel (including public transportation, tolls and parking), 2x points per dollar spent on dining and entertainment and 1x point on all other purchases. The card’s annual fee is $95, seems to be waived for the first 12 months on this offer.

Citi ThankYou Points are worth 1.25 cents when redeemed for travel directly through the ThankYou Travel Center. The points also can be transferred to travel partners, including JetBlue TrueBlue, Virgin Atlantic Flying Club, Virgin America Elevate, Singapore Airlines Krisflyer, Air France/KLM Flying Blue, Etihad Guest, Asia Miles, EVA Air Infinity MileageLands, Garuda Indonesia Frequent Flyer, Malaysia Airlines Enrich, Qantas Frequent Flyer, Qatar Privilege Club, Thai Royal Orchid Plus and Hilton HHonors.
Last year, the offer on this card was 50,000 ThankYou points, which was completely removed and listed with no sign-up offer at all for some time. Eventually, the welcome bonus came back—only it was 40,000 ThankYou points. For whatever reason, Citi keeps decreasing the bonus on this card little by little.
As a reminder, card members are not eligible for the bonus if they opened or closed Citi ThankYou Preferred, Citi ThankYou Premier or Citi Prestige cards in the last 24 months.
