Last month, I did something I have never done before – I signed up for a Delta credit card! Seriously, hell has frozen over, folks. I don’t live near a huge Delta hub, nor do I like the airline’s loyalty program. But alas, the new offer on the Platinum Delta SkyMiles® Business Credit Card from American Express won me over.
Part of the reason for my change of heart is because we have been flying out of Chicago recently. Over time, we’ve found that we can pick up a lot more nonstop flights, better prices, and better award availability if we make the 3-hour trek to the Windy City instead of flying out of Indianapolis.
But there are other reasons I signed up for this card as well. Here’s a rundown of the top features that won me over:
A huge signup bonus – Right now, you can earn 70,000 bonus miles and 10,000 Medallion® Qualification Miles (MQMs) after you spend $5,000 in purchases on your new Card in your first 3 months. While Delta’s award chart isn’t always the best, there are a number of good options when it comes to using your miles. With a Delta Platinum credit card, you can even pay with miles. In this case, 70,000 miles is worth $700 in airfare.
A free checked bag for me and companions – With this card in your wallet, you get a free checked bag for yourself and your companions on Delta itineraries. Since we’re flying Delta next year, we’ll put this benefit to good use.
Priority boarding – While I don’t care about getting on the plane early (unless I’m flying Southwest, of course!) most of the time, I do care about having a place to stow my carry-on luggage. I’ve been on too many flights where they run out of room, and I hate having to check my bag at the gate or having to search for available space at the last minute. Priority boarding lets you avoid that mess altogether.

$100 Delta statement credit – This card also comes with a $100 statement credit on Delta purchases during the first three months. I recently booked round-trip flights to Europe on Flying Blue, but we’ll actually fly Delta. I’m seriously considering using this statement credit to upgrade my husband and one of our kids to Delta comfort seats!
No foreign transaction fees – Since we have a bunch of overseas trips coming up, it’s annoying to have cards that charge foreign transaction fees. Fortunately, the Platinum Delta SkyMiles® Business Credit Card from American Express doesn’t charge any fees when you use it to make purchases abroad.
Final Thoughts
While the Platinum Delta SkyMiles® Business Credit Card from American Express does come with a $195 annual fee that isn’t waived the first year, the benefits more than make up for it. And who knows, maybe I will even enjoy Delta enough to fly it more often. At the end of the day, I no longer care how I get where I’m going as long as it’s affordable and comfortable.
Did you sign up for any of the new Delta credit card offers? Why or why not?
