Living in different cities means that you have access to different flights. Having access to different flights mean that different types of miles might better for one person compared with another. Here are my picks for the best low annual fee credit card to have if you live in or near these five U.S. cities.
Los Angeles
The Chase Sapphire Preferred Credit Card is so versatile that I’d recommend it for almost all people who want to travel. If you live in or near Los Angeles, you have access to so many flights on so many airlines that you need versatility. Chase Ultimate Rewards transfer to KLM/Air France Flying Blue, so you can redeem for SkyTeam flights, British Airways, so you can redeem for oneworld flights, and United, so you can redeem for Star Alliance flights. No matter what airline has availability, you’ll have a way to book it with Ultimate Rewards points.

Minneapolis
If you live in Minneapolis you probably want to have some access to Delta miles. Instead of getting a credit card that only earns Delta miles, get the Premier Rewards Gold Card from American Express. Currently, this credit card only has a sign-up bonus of 25,000 miles, but it has been known to go higher so I would wait until that time to apply. American Express Membership Rewards Points transfer to Delta and a bunch of other airline and hotel transfer partners so you’ll have the world at your fingertips.

St. Louis
If you live in St. Louis, you have a ton of access to Southwest Airlines flights. While Southwest Airlines won’t take you to too many international destinations, they’re fantastic for bopping around the U.S. and even down into the Caribbean and Central America. Right now the Southwest Premier Card will give you 50,000 Southwest Rapid Rewards for signing up and completing the minimum spending requirement so you’ll have plenty of miles to book your first trip. Stretch your points even further by making sure you earn the Southwest Companion Pass.

Miami
Miami is an American Airlines hub, so having access to American Airlines miles is a must if you live in or near Miami. Of course, getting an American Airlines credit card is an option, but by having the Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card from American Express, you have access to American Airlines miles and miles for many other airline transfer partners. With the SPG card, you earn 1 SPG point for every dollar spent, but when you transfer points in increments of 20,000 SPG points, you’ll earn a bonus of 5,000 airline miles into the program you are transferring to. This means that if you always transfer in increments of 20,000 points, you’ll really be earning 1.25 airline miles of your choice for every dollar spent on purchases.

Houston
The United Mileage Plus Explorer Card is a great option for Houston travelers. While it’s not the best credit card for earning a lot of miles, there is one really special thing about it that Houston travelers will love: it gives you access to additional award inventory. If you primarily expect to be traveling on partners, this isn’t going to be very helpful to you, but if you redeem your miles for flights on United’s own planes this could be the different between booking a low-level award and not having one available!
