Living in different areas of the country might mean that some credit card choices are better options for your travel needs. Today we’re going to take a look at the best credit card options if you live in or around the Detroit, MI area. If this is you – depending on the flight you are likely going to be flying out of Detroit (DTW) or maybe even Flint (FNT).

DTW is Delta’s second-largest hub and is the primary gateway to Asia for the eastern United States as well as being the third-busiest gateway to Europe for Delta. DTW is also a hub for budget carrier Spirit Airlines.

FNT is a much smaller and less busy airport, but sometimes offers competitive prices and more convenient schedules. The airport is serviced by Delta, United, American, and Southwest where you will be able to connect through hubs to get to other domestic and international destinations.

Currently, this credit card only has a 25,000 Membership Reward Point sign up bonus, and I would recommend waiting until it reaches at least 50,000 points before signing up. Nonetheless, I think this card is a great option for those of you living near Detroit. Delta is a transfer partner of Membership Rewards, as is KLM/Air France Flying Blue which will give you options to fly all over the U.S. as well as around the globe.

While neither DTW or FNT are hubs for Southwest Airlines, you do have quite a few options for destinations you can fly directly, and you can always connect, too. I find that Southwest prices to destinations like Denver, Baltimore, and Chicago are usually competitive with other airline’s prices. On top of that, you’ll get two checked bags for free every time you fly Southwest. You can stretch the value of your Southwest points even further by earning the Southwest Companion Pass.

3. Spirit Airlines World Mastercard

I know, I know, this sounds crazy, but I’m serious! With all of the extra fees that Spirit charges they can be a huge pain, but it makes for a cheap weekend trip! If you have the Spirit Airlines credit card you have better access to award flights and it’s much easier to keep your miles from expiring. This card isn’t going to give you great value for international or luxury flights, but if you’re looking for the occasional weekend away you can’t go wrong!

Honestly, I think this card is great no matter where you live. In addition to a 50,000 Ultimate Reward point sign up bonus after you spend $4,000 on purchases within the first three months of account option, you also will earn two points per dollar spent on travel and dining purchases and one point per dollar spent on everything else. The Sapphire Preferred has some wonderful travel protections built in including trip delay and cancellation coverage (both of which I’ve used in the past 12 months and has saved me over $600) as well as primary car rental insurance coverage. You just really can’t go wrong.

5. Alaska Airlines Visa Signature Credit Card

But Alaska is so far away from Detroit! Lucky for us, Alaska Airlines partners with both American Airlines and Delta, as well as a bunch of international carriers. You can only redeem for travel on Alaska Airlines and one partner airline at a time, but Alaska miles gives you a bunch of options. You can connect through to Seattle and on to anywhere Alaska partners fly, you can fly Delta domestically and internationally, American domestically and internationally, and KLM/Air France to Amsterdam or Paris and beyond. The options are pretty limitless.
