Married? These Reward Cards Work Best When Doubled

I always joke that being able to sign up for 2x the best rewards cards is one of the top reasons to get married. While that comment is half in jest, I love the fact I can sign my husband up for all the cards I have. With two rewards credit cards – and two signup bonuses – we can travel twice as far or stay twice as long.

Of course, some cards work better in doubles than others, either because they allow spouses to combine points or because double the points = double the fun. Either way, here are a few cards I believe work best when both spouses sign up:

IHG Select Rewards Credit Card

The IHG Select Rewards credit card is lucrative for a few reasons. First, you can earn a huge signup bonus worth several free nights. And second, you get a free night at any IHG property worldwide on your account anniversary.

The second part of the equation is the reason this card is such a winner for couples. If both spouses sign up for the card, you can have two free nights at any InterContinental Hotels Group property worldwide every year. While one free night is good, two free nights gives you enough for a weekend away.

Chase Sapphire Preferred

The Chase Sapphire Preferred card is another smart option for couples who want to rack up points together. With this card, you earn 50,000 points after you spend $4,000 within three months of account opening. Those points are worth $625 in travel, but you can also transfer them to popular loyalty programs like Marriott, Southwest Rapid Rewards, British Airways, Hyatt, Flying Blue, and IHG Rewards.

The best part, however, is that Chase lets you transfer points to spouses and domestic partners at the same address. You can also transfer your points to your spouse’s loyalty accounts, which makes it that much easier to pool your points for even more travel.

Starwood Preferred Guest card from American Express

The Starwood Preferred Guest card from American Express is another good one for couples. Why? Because Starwood Preferred Guest lets you combine your points with a spouse or domestic partner.

Being able to combine points is huge when it comes to maximizing your signup bonuses. With SPG’s 5th night free promotion, for example, you can get a 5th night free at any Category 3-7 property when you book four consecutive nights with points. Obviously, that’s a lot easier to do when both you and your spouse can earn your own signup bonus and pool your points in one account.

Final Thoughts

Don’t get married for the points or miles. But if you’re married or in a domestic partnership anyway, you might as well make the most of it. By getting your spouse on board with your rewards goals, you can score double the travel in half the time.

What cards do both you and your spouse or partner have?
